A well-planned and efficiently run online workshop takes time and care to consider the challenges that can occur when working remotely. But the process needs to be flexible, and the ability to adapt quickly in the moment is just as important for virtual facilitation (the person who makes sure that the workshop runs smoothly and engages participants) as it is for in-person facilitation.

A successful online workshop or meeting requires a balance of information sharing discussion, group discussions and other engagement activities. Also, it must tackle logistical issues such as inadequate technology, time management and note-taking. Often it falls on the facilitator online to manage all of these things and can be a challenge and stressful, especially if the meetings are not properly run or are not effective.

Virtual facilitation is becoming increasingly widespread as remote groups and organizations have to cope with the increasing demand for flexible meetings. It’s a skill best learned through experience, and it’s no different from in-person facilitation, but with the additional issue of keeping participants from remote locations in the loop and energized throughout the session.

Numerous studies have noted the importance of adjusting VF to the specific organization structure and the specific cultural characteristics of each facility. This was especially emphasized by Fox et al., who provided facilitators with guidelines for a certain number of virtual facilitation sessions per center. Other studies, including those of Malone et. al. and Hartmann included a section of training for internal facilitators which focused on developing capabilities, competencies, and knowledge specifically associated with virtual facilitation.
